The 2015 Quiksilver Get Free Series ended in style at the weekend as competitors in the 3A-rated Surfing South Africa (SSA) Pro Surf Tour (PST) Quiksilver Get Free Series held at East Beach in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape were blessed with excellent surf on both days of competition.
Top ranked International surfer Beyrick De Vries of Umhlanga showed his class in the premier Open Men’s division final when his incredible double tube ride scored a perfect 10 and gave him victory over current World Masters Champion Greg Emslie of East London.
De Vries, who won the previous Quiksilver event in Umhlanga, was very happy with his result, ”The waves were so good today, I love surfing in Port Alfred and this win gives me a lot of confidence going into my next few events overseas. Events like the Quiksilver Get Free Series are really good for competitive surfing in South Africa.”
Fellow top ranked international Michael February of Kommetjie looked at home in the point-like conditions but had to settle for third while Josh Smit of Amanzimtoti finished in fourth place.
In the U20 boys final Adin Masencamp of Strand put together two great rides to claim victory ahead of an in form Shane Sykes of Salt Rock. Sykes, who won the second leg of the series
in Umhlanga Rocks, put one huge score on the board with some massive manoeuvres but failed to back it up with a second decent scoring ride. Tristan Lev of St Francis Bay surfed well to place third and Jason Harris of Scottburgh, placed fourth.
The boys U16 division was a competitive affair involving all four of the members of the National Junior team who will be representing California at the ISA World Junior Championships in October.
After an exciting twenty minute final Sebastian Williams of Durban took the title ahead of U20 winner Adin Masencamp with Joshe Faulkner of Jeffreys Bay placing third ahead of Luke Malherbe of East London.
Dane Patterson, Quiksilver Sales and Marketing Manager said, “We’re very happy with such a good 2015 Quiksilver Get Free series and the great waves in Port Alfred for the final event just
ended it off perfectly. We’ve invested in the sport and hope to grow on this. We need to create a solid platform for our local surfers to use as a springboard to gain the necessary experience to compete at an international level and earn some prize money at the same time.”
