The Crawford North Coast team of Wade Simkiss, Richard Cowan, Luke Mc Cracken, Chad Minnaar, Jason Ray, Kei Weyer and Callum Carlson narrowly defeated Wynberg Boys High of Cape Town to win the 2013 Billabong National Interschool’s Surfing Championships in tough conditions and three foot surf at Durban’s Dairy Beach Saturday (October 26).The annual Surfing South Africa tournament was supported by Sport and Recreation South Africa and hosted by the KZN Schools Surfing League’
Crawford, who competed with a full team of five surfers in the final, posted a heat total of 76.2 points to the Wynberg Boys High total of 71,7 points. The four strong Wynberg Boys High Team line up comprised Dylan and Donovan Wichmann, Matthew Koen and Connor Mc Laughlin.
Durban High School accumulated 58 points to end third while Northwood A scored 53 points and came fourth. The beaten semi finalists were Westville High, Nico Malan High of Jeffrey’s Bay, Amanzimtoti High and Crawford North Coast Girls. Crawford North Coast Girls, the only all girls team in the event, were recognized for their performance and awarded gold medals

Dylan Wichmann (WBHS) claimed the Surfer of the Contest title when he won the individual Power Surfer final. Wichmann beat Slater Rudling of Amanzimtoti High into second place while ,Bevan Willis of Northwood A and Wade Simkiss of Crawford North Coast came third and fourth respectively.
Bevan Willis (Northwood A) and Chanelle Botha (Amanzimtoti) were named the Best Boy and Best Girl surfer respectively and Sifiso Mhlongo (Umthombo) and S’nehlandla Makubu (South Beach) were named the Most Improved Boy and Girl surfer at the event.
Thirteen teams of surfers representing 10 schools from all parts of South Africa competed in the 2013 Billabong National Interschool’s Surfing Championships.

The Billabong National Interschool’s Championships is a Surfing South Africa tournament sponsored by Billabong and supported by Sport and Recreation South Africa. The hosts this year were the KZN School Surfing League.
