The long awaited start of the Coast Thru Life Single & Unattached Classic Single Fin Invitational Longboarding contest presented by New Era Hat Philippines got underway this afternoon in La Union with Round 1 and the Semifinals of the Tiny Toes (Junior) Division as well as Round 1 of the Women’s Division run in 1-2 foot wind affected surf at Mona Liza Point.

After seeing a very flat ocean in the early morning hours, by mid morning the expected swell showed signs of life and by mid day the call was on for a 1:00 pm start.

The “Tiny Toes” Junior Division saw first action, with 18 competitors ranging from 9 year old June Esquivel to last year’s winner 18 year old Jhenard Fernandez taking on the at times challenging conditions but finding some nice little sections and showing their already budding talents at classic longboarding.

ASC Judge Erwin Van Putten was impressed by the youngster’s ability, saying, “So far here in Asia I’ve never seen such young groms surfing so well on longboards, especially with classic logging style like this…I’m really impressed!”

The first round of the Women’s Division had 11 competitors, ranging from local current champion Daisy Valdez to Australian Seal Yates, South Korean’s Jina Kim and Sunshine Shin, and America Carla Zamora (Rowland), taking on at times challenging conditions in what Carla Zamora exclaimed was “one of the hardest heats I’ve surfed in a long time!”

Luckily she easily made it through her heat and is into the semi finals, which will be held tomorrow along with the remainder of the competition.

The swell is expected to increase overnight and hopefully see some glassy conditions to start the Men’s Division for the 32 competitors who have been waiting for 4 days to get out into the water. They have been told to stand by at 6:30 am for a 7:00 am start.

The competition will conclude tomorrow afternoon with a beachside award presentation in front of the Mona Liza Resort, where the winners will receive cash and prizes from the event sponsors as well as the honor of being crowned a Single & Unattached champion!
