ISA launches its first ever Surfing Movie: For a Better Surfing Future

The International Surfing Association is proud to present "For a Better Surfing Future", the first ever ISA movie. It features the life of the five 2007 ISA Individual Scholarship Program recipients: Juninho Urcia from Peru, Imani Wilmot from Jamaica, Guillermo Satt from Chile, Diego Vargas from Ecuador and Lungani Memani from South Africa.
This is the story of five young surfers and their dreams, struggling in countries where the odds of success are stacked against them. Five local directors give us an inside look of the day to day lives of those who follow the great dream of becoming professional surfers.
They are good surfers, good students and great role models for their community.
In five short films, we take the journey to the deep blue of the Jamaican Caribbean, the desert beaches of Northern Peru, the green of the beautiful Ecuadorian waves, the heavy South Pacific waves of Arica, Chile and the Xhosa view of surfing in South Africa.

During the sixth edition of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championship, on Saturday, May 31, in the VVF Hotel of Seignosse, France, the movie premiered in front of the representatives of the 27 participating countries, as well as important industry and National Federations names. It was a great moment in which the invitees were able to see a different type of surfing movie.

About the ISA Individual Scholarship Program
The ISA Individual Scholarship Program aims to give direct assistance to those under 18 academic surfers that are on the right track of becoming great surfing stars, but who are also in finance need to achieve their goals.
The applicants were chosen based on their strong desire to become involved in surfing on an international level and preference was given to surfers competing at the junior level of ISA competition. All applicants were required to submit proof of current student standings with report cards or academic records of the last two years, sign an oath stating that they will remain a student if chosen as a recipient of a scholarship, submit a plan of how they wish to use the money, provide a letter of recommendation written by their NGB President and write an essay, “Why I Deserve an ISA Individual Surf Scholarship”.
After reviewing many strong applications, the ISA Executive Committee came to a unanimous decision on the recipients.
The Individual Scholarship Program’s main objective is to provide funds to facilitate experience in surfing while encouraging the importance of education. Each recipient will be awarded $1,200 which may be used to travel to surf contests, buy new surf equipment and support an education. The ISA hopes that the scholarship will help enable these young surfers to follow their dreams by using the support to become better surfers, potential national champions and even possibly world champions while at the same time continuing with their education.
About International Surfing Association (ISA)
The International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the World Governing Authority for surfing, bodyboarding and surfriding. It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running world championships since 1964 and the Junior World Championships since 1980.
ISA membership includes the surfing National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of over 50 countries on six continents. Its headquarters are located in San Diego, California. It is presided by Fernando Aguerre, first elected in 1994 in Rio, and re-elected six times since. The ISA's four Vice Presidents are Alan Atkins (Australia), Robin de Kock (South Africa), Maile Aguerre (Hawaii) and Mike Gerard (USA).
Note: For 2008, the ISA Scholarship program was expanded to 20 surfers, with the funding and support of Billabong, the Quiksilver Foundation and Reef.

La International Surfing Association se enorgullece en presentar For a Better Surfing Future, su primera película en la historia. Retratando la vida de los cinco ganadores del Programa de Becas Individuales de la ISA 2007: Juninho Urcia de Perú, Imani Wilmot de Jamaica, Guillermo Satt de Chile, Diego Vargas de Ecuador y Lungani Memani de Sudáfrica.
Ésta es la historia de cinco jóvenes surfistas y sus sueños, lidiando en países en donde las posibilidades de éxito están en su contra. Cinco directores locales nos dan una visión interna del día a día en las vidas de aquellos que buscan lograr el gran sueño de ser surfistas profesionales.
Son buenos surfistas, buenos estudiantes y excelentes ejemplos para sus comunidades.

Sobre el Programa de Becas Individuales de la ISA
El Programa de Becas Individuales de la ISA desea brindar asistencia directa a aquellos surfistas menores de 18 años, estudiantes, que están en el camino correcto para convertirse en estrellas del mundo surfístico, pero que tienen necesidades financieras para lograr sus metas.
Los aspirantes fueron elegidos basados en su fuerte deseo de verse envueltos en una carrera surfística a nivel internacional y se le dio preferencia a aquellos que compiten en la división Junior en los eventos de la ISA. A todos se les requirió mostrar sus carnés de situación académica de los últimos dos años, firmar un juramento declarando que seguirán siendo estudiantes si son elegidos como ganadores de una beca, también entregar un plan sobre cómo gastarían el dinero, proveer una carta de recomendación escrita por el Presidente de su NGB y escribir un ensayo llamado “Por qué merezco una Beca Individual de la ISA”.
Luego de revisar varias aplicaciones, el Comité Ejecutivo de la ISA llega a una decisión unánime de los ganadores.
El principal objetivo del Programa de Becas Individuales es proveer fondos para facilitar la práctica del surfing, incentivando al mismo tiempo la importancia de la educación. Cada ganador recibe 1.200 Dólares Americanos que pueden ser usados para viajar a campeonatos, comprar equipamiento para surfear, soporte y educación. La ISA desea que la beca ayude a estos jóvenes a seguir con sus sueños, por medio del aprovechamiento de este apoyo para que se conviertan en mejores surfistas, potenciales campeones nacionales y también mundiales, mientras que al mismo tiempo continúen con su educación.
Sobre la International Surfing Association
La ISA es reconocida por el Comité Olímpico Internacional –IOC, siglas en inglés- como la Autoridad Gobernante del Mundo en surfing, bodyboarding, y surfriding.
