Sofía Mulanovich to defend Peru in Billabong ISA World Surfing Games
Strong Peruvian team looking forward to getting back in the Top 4
ISA and ASP 2004 World Champion, Sofía Mulanovich, has confirmed that she will be a part of the Peruvian Team for the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games to be held in Playa Hermosa, Jaco, Costa Rica from August 1- 8.
"Yes, I will be in Costa Rica for the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games representing Peru in this great event", said Sofía. "I love representing Peru in Latin American countries. It feels like being at home, in a country where they speak your own language. It is a better experience than competing in a far away country."
Peruvian Sofía Mulanovich, is the only surfer in history, male or female, to be crowned World Champion in the ISA World Surfing Games and the ASP World Tour in the same year. She won the Gold Medal in Ecuador 2004 and later the ASP World Title in Hawaii, thus achieving two of the most important titles a surfer can dream of acquiring in one season.
The addition of Sofía strengthens an already strong Peruvian team. The Open Men's division is composed of finalists from the recent WQS in Arica, Peru, Gabriel Villarán and Álvaro Malpartida, a former Latin American Champion, Javier Swayne and local standout Matías Mulanovich. The Longboard division includes Piccolo Clemente and Tamil Martino.
Joining Sofía in the Open Women's division is ASP World Junior Runner-Up and former Latin American Champion, Analí Gómez.
Karín Sierralta, Peruvian Team Manager, said the following about his expectations of having Sofía on his team, "Sofía's presence is a great incentive for the team. It's going to be great watching her in an ISA event, joining the kids that competed with her in previous events. Our main goal is to make it back to the Top 4. I think Costa Rica is a good place to achieve this again, the waves are great and surfing in good conditions is our biggest strength."
Peru has a great record in the history of ISA events. They won a Copper Medal in the 2004 ISA World Surfing Games and they consistently place in the Top 15. Peru is definitely a team whose performance gets better with the size of the waves.
About the ISA
The International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the World Governing Authority for Surfing and all Surfriding activities, including Short Board, Longboard, Bodyboard, Kneeboard, Tandem, Skimboard, Tow In and Stand Up Paddle surfing. It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running world championships since 1964 and the Junior World Championships since 1980.
ISA membership includes the surfing National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of over 50 countries on six continents. Its headquarters are located in La Jolla, California. It is presided by Fernando Aguerre, first elected in 1994 in Rio, and re-elected six times since. The ISA’s four Vice Presidents are Alan Atkins (Australia), Robin de Kock (South Africa), Mike Gerard (USA), and Karin Sierralta (Peru).

Sofía Mulanovich participará en los Billabong ISA World Surfing Games
El equipo Peruano se va a Costa Rica armado hasta los dientes
Sofía Mulanovich, Campeona Mundial en el 2004 tanto de la ISA como de la ASP, confirmó que estará integrando al Equipo Peruano de Surfing en los Billabong ISA World Surfing Games que serán realizados en Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica desde el 1º hasta el 8 de Agosto.
"Sí, sí estaré en Costa Rica para el Mundial ISA representando a Perú en este gran evento", comentó Sofía y continuó: "Me gusta representar a Perú en países de América Latina, se siente como estar en casa, es un lugar donde te hablan en español. Es mejor que competir en un países que están más lejos".
La Peruana Sofía Mulanovich es la única surfista en la historia en lograr ser campeón mundial en la división Open de los World Surfing Games y del ASP World Tour en el mismo año. En el 2004 se consagró en Ecuador y meses después en Hawai, venciendo los más importantes galardones del surfing mundial en la misma temporada.
Además de Sofía, el Equipo Peruano de Surfing estará contando con fuertes exponentes como los recientes finalistas del WQS de Arica, Gabriel Villarán y Álvaro Malpartida, el ex Campeón Latinoamericano de Surfing, Javier Swayne y el destaque Matías Mulanovich en la Open. En Longboard los seleccionados serán Piccolo Clemente y Tamil Martino. Y en Damas, acompañando a Sofía estará la Vicecampeona Mundial junior de la ASP y Campeona Latinoamericana, Analí Gómez.
El Team Manager del Equipo Peruano, Karín Sierralta, comentó sobre el Seleccionado Peruano y sus expectativas: "La presencia de Sofía es una motivación importante para el Equipo, será un placer verla nuevamente en un evento de la ISA, acompañando a los chicos que han sido sus compañeros en eventos anteriores. Nuestro objetivo es volver a estar entre los mejores cuatro. Creo que Costa Rica es un buen lugar para lograrlo una vez más, las olas son buenas y surfear en buenas condiciones es nuestro fuerte".
Perú tiene un buen record en la historia de los World Surfing Games. En el 2004 logró la medalla de cobre por equipos y en el resto de las ediciones se ubicó siempre entre los mejores quince. Es un equipo que definitivamente ve su performance mejorar conforme al tamaño del mar.

La International Surfing Association (ISA) es reconocida por el Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) como la Autoridad Gobernante en el mundo de todas las actividades de surfriding, incluyendo tabla corta, Longboard, Bodyboard, Kneeboard, Tandem, Skimboard, Tow In y Stand Up Paddle surfing. Originalmente fue fundada como la Federación Internacional de Surf en 1964 y ha realizado los Campeonatos Mundiales desde ese entonces y los Mundiales Junior desde 1980.
